Family Program

Affirmations recognizes the importance of the family and loved ones in the process of healing from addiction. Addiction is a family disease, so the family needs to become part of the solution.

“Family therapy in substance abuse treatment can help by using the family's strengths and resources to find ways for the person who abuses alcohol or drugs to live without substances of abuse and to ameliorate the impact of chemical dependency on both the patient and the family. Family therapy…can help families become aware of their own needs and aid in the goal of keeping substance abuse from moving from one generation to another”. SAMSHA News, 2004

While at Affirmations, the client’s primary therapist facilitates weekly sessions to address progress, family issues and building relationships hurt by addiction and related destructive behaviors. Some of the issues we work on are:

  • Trust and mistrust
  • Changing communication systems
  • Trauma history
  • Multi-generational addiction and mental health issues
  • Change for all members, just only the client
  • Ala-non referrals
  • Sobriety support
  • Education and therapy about addiction
  • Agreements and commitments moving forward

The Intensive Family Program (4 days of family work in the Program) is scheduled at the end of the second month and coordinated by the primary therapist. It is critical that the client receive a significant dosage of treatment prior to the family joining in such an intensive fashion. We schedule full days of exercises, therapy, education workshops and social events, with the client and family during this time. We have seen tremendous change and recovery during the Family Program.
