An Integrated Addiction Treatment Approach
Addiction is a complicated and difficult disease, both to live with as well as to treat.  It is fatal if left untreated.  The disease is both multi-faceted and multi-factorial.  What this means is that addiction presents itself as many different faces and its roots can come from several different causes.  Unlike other programs that attempt to treat addiction solely through a 12-step group method, or solely through individual core issue work, Affirmations presents a unique blend of treatment modalities that address the disease from many different angles.  After all, a multi-faceted disease like addiction requires a multi-faceted treatment approach!  In other words, Affirmations is a holistic addiction treatment program.  However, it is much more than holistic.  Other so-called holistic drug rehabs offer an array of treatment approaches but the various treatments are poorly integrated.  Integration of the various treatments is the key which produces a treatment approach in which all aspects come together in a unified, sensible way.  The treatment facets at Affirmations are expertly and seamlessly integrated in such a way as to produce a highly successful treatment approach, which guides you along a roadmap toward lasting recovery.

One of the “faces” of addiction is that it is a disease.   It is not a choice that someone makes.  It does not come from being a “weak” or “flawed” person.  Similar to cancer or heart disease, the person did not decide to have or not to have the disease.  It is also a chronic disease.  However, there is good news.  Addiction is highly treatable.  Affirmations is a drug and alcohol rehab that treats the addiction and teaches you how to manage the disease in the long term.  Notice, that the disease must be managed, not the use of drugs or alcohol.  The fact is when you are suffering from addiction, you can not control its use in the long term.  Trying to “control” is always a short term phenomenon.  For example, many people suffering from addiction can manage to be abstinent from drugs or alcohol for a period of days, months, or in some cases, years.  However, without proper management of the disease, relapse is imminent.  That’s why a clear roadmap to recovery is so critical.  At Affirmations we specialize in addiction relapse prevention to give you the best chance of success.

Individual Core Issues
Addiction often has root core issues that need to be addressed at an individual and highly personalized level.  Many purely 12-step treatment programs are focused mostly on group work, which does not allow exploration, let alone identification, of individual core issues which are unique to each person, but which may be a significant factor in the perpetuation of the disease.  That’s why a thorough individual evaluation, followed by intensive treatment from an experienced addiction therapist, is such a critical element of addiction treatment.  Often people who have been through treatment but continue to relapse come to the understanding that these core issues, often stemming from their upbringing or early adulthood, have played a significant role in their relapse.  On the other hand, when properly handled, these same core issues can be turned into an ally in the treatment of the disease of addiction.  The unique person that you are, the strengths that you have, stem from early experiences even though many of the early experiences may have been quite difficult.  At Affirmations, we tap into these strengths and unique attributes to bring you along the path of recovery.  Often healing of certain core issues needs to occur in order for the person to able to move on in their life and fully engage in the treatment process.  With our expert care, we explore individual core issues, begin the healing process, as well as develop and foster your unique abilities to help achieve sustained recovery.

Dual Diagnosis
One of the other important factors in both the cause and the treatment of addiction is when other illnesses occur along with the addiction.  This is called “dual-diagnosis” or “co-occurring disorder”.  Very often, people with addiction present with symptoms of depression, other mood disorders, attention deficit problems or anxiety.  Trauma-like symptoms are also quite common.  Dual diagnosis can sometimes be difficult to diagnose and requires an evaluation by a qualified mental health professional familiar with addiction and other psychiatric conditions.  Many times the effects of the substance that you are using (alcohol and drugs have direct negative effects on the brain and the brain’s chemistry) can mimic symptoms of psychiatric disorders.  In other words, drugs and alcohol can cause symptoms that look like a psychiatric disorder.  Other times, there is a true psychiatric problem which is separate from the addiction that needs to be treated.  With a little bit of time and getting to know your history, the trained professionals at Affirmations will be able to determine if you have a dual diagnosis.  Just as important, the dual diagnosis will be expertly treated in a best-practice manner by the psychiatrist and therapists.  It is important to treat a co-occurring illness properly because, untreated, the co-occurring illness will not only cause suffering for the individual but it can also be a major trigger for relapse.
