Pain Management
Pain is one of the oldest and most pervasive medical conditions that affect a person’s abilities to function with everyday living at home, work and play. There are medications that assist in the management of pain. However, many of these drugs are highly addictive, and eventually, the issue is not your pain, but the addiction caused by the dependence on pain relieving medication(s). The result of the addiction is change in character, stealing, lying, cheating, etc. Now, you have both a pain problem AND an addiction problem.
We’ve seen celebrities, politicians and maybe a friend or family member addicted to one or more of these pain relievers (e.g. Vicodin, OxyContin, Percocet, Morphine, etc.). These medications certainly have their benefits, but a wise physician should be constantly weighing with the patient the risk/benefit balance. Often, the addict risking much by staying on these medications, while those who are not addicted most likely benefit from the medications quite well. Once you realize you are addicted to these pain killers, then you should be consulting your physician for treatment.
Pain management, in a rehab, often benefits from a multidisciplinary approach that includes meditation, acupuncture, nutrition, personal fitness, pilates, biofeedback and psychotherapies. Of course, a physician would be monitoring your progress and may prescribe a non-addictive, pain modifying medications.
